24 They do not say to themselves, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives autumn and spring rains in season, who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’ 25 Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good. – Jeremiah 5:24-25
God often gets blamed for the bad things that happen in our world. And when good things do happen He doesn’t get credit for them.
Larry King once commented to a guest preacher on his show that if God does exist, how come there’s still crime and poverty? Why doesn’t He put a stop to all of these things?
We live in a world that has dismissed any notion of personal accountability. It is so much easier to blame God and others for our own demise. It seems that everything that happens to us is due to the actions of others.
Other times we try to explain the catastrophic events that happen in our environment entirely through scientific lenses. Humanity is still groping in the dark when it comes to the truth that our actions have consequences. Our sins ultimately yield horrific consequences not just to ourselves, our relationships, but to this whole planet we live in. When we fail to follow God’s prescriptions for living according to His word, expect to experience dire consequences.
God’s voice is heard through a planet that’s hurting because of our destructive actions. Calamities abound all around us because we have mismanaged our relationship to God, to others, and to this planet that God gifted us with. It is reeling with so much hurt and pain waiting for redemption.
How about you? Are there things you’ve done that continue to haunt and imprison you today? First step: Own up to them; secondly, ask God to forgive you; thirdly, seek forgiveness from others whom you may have hurt; and always, repeat the steps when necessary but always learn from all these to avoid having to go back to the first step.
